New Plymouth & Devon Walking Book

NEW PLYMOUTH & DEVON WALK BOOK, A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION IN AID OF LOCAL CHARITIES

If you fancy a walk on the moors, in the countryside or on the coast, then a new book just published, has everything you need. Plym Ramblers, a walking club based in Plymouth, has just produced a book entitled “On the Beaten Track 3”. As the name implies, this is the third book in the series of popular walks, easily accessed from Plymouth.

24 Walks around Devon all within 25 Miles of Plymouth – There are 24 walks in this well presented book and the distances covered vary between four and eight miles. Each walk has step by step directions and an informative map, as well as plenty of photographs and illustrations.

On the Beaten Track 3 is an attractive publication with some interesting and unusual features. As well as illustrations and photographs, there are a variety of cartoons dotted about and the special “points of interest” section provides some entertaining and informative details about each walk, which should appeal to everyone.

The book was written by Brian Steele (chairman of the Plym Ramblers) and he was assisted in this task by Chris and Dave Bishop who provided the points of interest information and members of the Plym Ramblers who checked all the walks for accuracy. This means that we can be confident that the route descriptions should be ok for a few years to come.

Brian, in describing the book, stressed that its purpose is to encourage people to take up walking as a hobby/pastime. It is particularly useful for families and friends, and more importantly, it is a healthy and enjoyable form of exercise.

The publication of the book has been supported with a grant from Devon Community Foundation and this reinforces the value put upon the health aspects of walking in the countryside

The other main feature of this book is that the entire net proceeds from its sale will be donated to four local charities. These are: –

Children’s Hospice South West (Precious Lives Appeal)
The Children’s Hospice South West care for children who have illnesses which mean they will die before reaching adulthood. They provide expert care for them, their parents and well siblings.

St. Lukes Hospice
St Luke’s Hospice, Plymouth has launched a new emotive campaign called ‘Making Memories’ which tells a story from the viewpoint of young ‘Jake’ whose father is in the Hospice at Christmas time. To read Jake’s story, please click here.

Woodside Animal Welfare Trust
The Woodside Animal Welfare Trust is an animal rehoming charity based on the outskirts of Plymouth in Devon.
